Top Cat – Complete Series $38.23 The most urban and urbane of William Hanna and Joseph Barbera’s prime-time network cartoon shows, Top Cat ran for one season in 1961-1962 but has since enjoyed four decades of reruns on various network and cable outlets; back around 1990 or so, the Cartoon Network even had a contest that allowed viewers to get their own cats onto the show (winning felines were morphed into scenes with the cartoon cats of the series). Even more than The Flintstones, Top Cat had a special appeal to adults and an even more direct appeal to viewers from New York City or the surrounding area, or who had some theatrical background; its inspiration derived in part from the show Top Banana and the series Sgt. Bilko, both starring Phil Silvers (Arnold Stang’s voicing of Top Cat is a near-mimick of Silvers). Viewed today, the animated series is even cleverer with a few twists on common vernacular and popular culture that were pretty daring for television in the early ’60s. It also looks great, due in large part to the producers’ over-compensation for the limitations of broadcast television in the early ’60s — the color scheme, as is pointed out in one of the three-episode-long commentary tracks, was designed for maximum impact on black-and-white screens and looks like thick pastels; and the thick lines were intended to show up well on the low-resolution broadcasts of the period. It all makes serious impact today, viewed in full-screen (1.33:1) digital video, and the audio is a match, crisp and bright, including Hoyt Curtin’s very Gershwin-like music. The 30 episodes are shown intact, and one of them — The Missing Heir — is presented twice, once straight and once in tandem with the storyboard drafts for the originally conceived show (tentatively called J.B. and Company), to compare concept and realization. There’s also a gallery of original artwork from the series and ephemera such as original Kelloggs commercials from the show with the series’ characters, end credits with the sponsor plug, and a Karaoke-style sing-along presentation of the theme song; but far and away the best of the bonus features are the commentary tracks and the on-camera interviews with the voice artists who worked on the show — the latter includes Marvin Kaplan, Arnold Stang, and Leo De Lyon along with one of the writers. Seated on a set made up like the alleyway where much of the cartoon show took place, they all show genuine affection for the series and their work on it, even four decades later, and reveal some fascinating details about how those sessions ran (they were apparently like a party most of the time and as much fun as work). Morph the Cat $10.38 There are no surprises in sound and style on Morph the Cat, Donald Fagen’s long-awaited third solo album, nor should any be expected — ever since Steely Dan’s 1980 masterwork, Gaucho, his work, either on his own or with longtime collaborator Walter Becker, has been of a piece. Each record has been sleek, sophisticated, and immaculately produced, meticulously recorded and arranged, heavy on groove and mood, which tends to mask the sly wit of the songs. When it works well — as it did on Fagen’s peerless 1982 solo debut, The Nightfly, or on Steely Dan’s 2001 comeback, Two Against Nature — the results go down smoothly upon first listen and reveal their complexity with each spin; when it doesn’t quite succeed — both 1993′s Kamakiriad and the Dan’s 2003 effort Everything Must Go didn’t quite gel — the albums sound good but samey on the surface and don’t quite resonate. Morph the Cat belongs in the first group: at first it sounds cozily familiar, almost too familiar, but it digs deep, both as music and song.Sonically, at least superficially, it is very much a continuation of the two Steely Dan records of the new millennium — not only does it share Fagen’s aesthetic, but it was recorded with many of the same musicians who have shown up on the Dan projects. There are slight differences — without Becker around, there’s a greater emphasis on keyboards and the songs stretch on a bit longer than anything on Everything Must Go — but this, at least on pure sonics, could have functioned as a sequel to Two Against Nature. But Morph the Cat is very much a solo affair, fitting comfortably next to his first two solo albums as a conclusion to what he calls a trilogy. If The Nightfly concerned the past and Kamakiriad was set in a hazy future, Morph the Cat is rooted in the present, teeming with the fears and insecurities of post-9/11 America. Fagen doesn’t camouflage his intent with the gleefully enigmatic rhymes that have been his trademark: his words, while still knowingly sardonic, are direct, and in case you don’t want to bother reading the lyrics or listening closely, he helpfully offers brief explanations of the songs (for instance, on “Mary Shut the Garden Door,” he writes “Paranoia blooms when a thuggish cult gains control of the government,” a statement that’s not exactly veiled). On top of this unease, Fagen faces mortality throughout the album — he talks with the ghost of Ray Charles, borrows W.C. Fields’ phrase for death for “Brite Nitegown,” writes about attempted suicides — and every song seems to be about things drawing to a close. It’s a little disarming to hear Fagen talk so bluntly — although he came close to doing so on the deliberately nostalgic The Nightfly, the fact that he was writing about the past kept him at a bit of a distance — but despite the abundance of morbid themes, Morph the Cat never sounds dour or depressing. Cat Scratch Fever $19.98 Despite becoming one of the rock’s biggest concert attractions, Ted Nugent needed that one album and single that would break through in a big way, and the 1977 album and single of the same name, Cat Scratch Fever, did the trick. Cat Scratch Fever matched the focused ferocity of Nugent’s excellent 1975 debut (due to singer Derek St. Holmes’ re-entry into the band), featuring another first-rate set of brash hard rockers. While the title track is a certified classic anthem (the only solo Nugent single to crack the Top 30), other tracks are just as delightful, such as the oh-so-subtle “Wang Dang Sweet Poontang.” Further standouts include such underrated compositions as “Live It Up,” “Workin’ Hard, Playin’ Hard,” and “Out of Control,” plus the exquisitely melodic instrumental “Home Bound,” which the Beastie Boys would sample on their 1992 mega-hit album Check Your Head (the track “The Biz vs. the Nuge”). A Top 20 release, Cat Scratch Fever was the last Nugent release to feature his original solo band (St. Holmes, along with bassist Rob Grange, left for good in 1978).
