The Best of Blue Collar Comedy $11.18 When it comes to best-of collections, comedy doesn’t work as well as musical genres, mostly because routines are parts of acts and sequenced in such a way that momentum is built. This two-CD set of country comedians the Blue Collar Comedy Tour (Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy, Ron White, and Bill Engvall) does a surprisingly good job of imitating a real live comedy set, just one filled with fan favorites. It is desirable for newcomers since the group’s discography is large and two CDs is right-sized, leaving no room for filler. The numerous tracks from the Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie and Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again soundtracks show the compilers were going for mass appeal, while the generous helping of loose encore material acts as a nod to the longtime fans who find this part of the set the highlight. 15? Off Cool $9.99 The title to countrified comedian Bill Engvall’s umpteenth release refers to how much an “Everyman” he is. Just like you average Joe, Engvall feels a little off from society, “not a like a Dungeons & Dragons dork, but just a little dork.” This approachable style comes off even better in front of his hometown Texas audience, which is where this Comedy Central special, DVD, and CD was recorded. Comfortably strolling through his routine like an old friend telling stories, Engvall covers plenty of everyday frustrations in a connectable, Cosby-esque fashion with an extra helping of gross, but a tame type of gross that won’t offend most. For instance, fellow Blue Collar comedian Larry the Cable Guy may be bold and proud when he breaks wind, while Engvall is timid and horrified to do it in front of his wife on the body function obsessed “Hurting Gas.” His strongest material isn’t gross at all with the great quip “What’s a negative ion? I ain’t never seen one!” dropped in “Ionic Breeze” while “Wives and NASCAR” suggests the drivers should dump their spotters and bring their nagging significant others along for advice (“Go around him! You’re just being a jackass!”). Towering above it all is the title track, which finds Engvall stumbling and fumbling when he has the honor of meeting his hero, George Strait. Even if it doesn’t have an instant catch phrase like his popular “Here’s Your Sign,” the excellent routine makes up for all the jokes that are so corny you expect that loose fence board from Hee Haw to appear and whup him on the rear. The Best of Blue Collar Comedy $13.98 When it comes to best-of collections, comedy doesn’t work as well as musical genres, mostly because routines are parts of acts and sequenced in such a way that momentum is built. This two-CD set of country comedians the Blue Collar Comedy Tour (Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy, Ron White, and Bill Engvall) does a surprisingly good job of imitating a real live comedy set, just one filled with fan favorites. It is desirable for newcomers since the group’s discography is large and two CDs is right-sized, leaving no room for filler. The numerous tracks from the Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie and Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again soundtracks show the compilers were going for mass appeal, while the generous helping of loose encore material acts as a nod to the longtime fans who find this part of the set the highlight. USED: The Eyes of Alice Cooper $4.99 Give him points for persistence: Alice Cooper just won’t quit. He’s seen it all from the bottom to the top — and done the trip more than once — but still continues on his merry-morbid way, punching out albums like a spry young’un. The first thing one has to say about The Eyes of Alice Cooper is thank Jehovah and all his witnesses that the Mascara’d One has grown out of his metal/industrial phase. That look just never took. Discs like Brutal Planet (2000) and the somewhat better Dragontown (2001) offered little to his legacy or his legion of fans — aside from nascent headbangers discovering the Coop for the first time. Eyes harks back to Alice’s overly maligned early-’80s discs Special Forces and Flush the Fashion — albums that suffered by comparison with his landmark ’70s releases but remain far more musically appealing than the aforementioned new-millennium fare. It takes a couple of listens to “get it,” but there is some very good material here: largely derivative, yes, but energetic and entertaining nonetheless. And the old sneer-and-wink is back and comes through in lyrics that, unlike the sonics, are distinctive. The punkish “Man of the Year” is a tragicomedy rip on button-down-collar types who climb life’s ladder only to end up putting a gun in their mouths. “Novocaine” (the very word brings back memories of Billion Dollar Babies and “Unfinished Sweet”) has, believe it, a Bruce Springsteen guitar sound. The best rocker of the pack is “Detroit City,” a quasi-anthemic, mid-tempo grunter fuelled by a slapping, tom-tom beat and a fist-pumping chorus. (MC5′s Wayne Kramer adds an extra axe on this one.) The classically Cooper-esque ballad “Be With You a While” is another scene-stealer (“I wish I could tell you/Something you didn’t know/I wish I could give you/Something you didn’t own”) and shows that the ol’ snake-twirler still has a sensitive side.
