Cat Refuses to Use Scratchers?

My 8 month old female cat loves to scratch the carpet around our apartment. We have two cat trees (1 carpet, 1 sisal) and several horizontal cardboard scratchers. We’ve tried catnip and playing near the scratchers. I can’t reinforce her using the scratcher if she won’t use it. If I pick her up and put her by a scratcher when she starts scratching the carpet she just looks at me like “what do you want me to do with this?”. She’s not afraid of the trees and will climb up on them frequently. She has recently started scratching the back of one of our couches as well. We tried Pet Organics No Scratch (garlic oil) on her favorite scratch spots with no results. We’ve also tried rubbing catnip on the scratchers, which she loves to sniff and eat, but doesn’t scratch. She has no other behavior problems beside this. We are at our wits end trying to get her to scratch an appropriate place.

Please if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

I used a spray repellent called Boundary with mine and covered the couch with a sheet…
Cat’s don’t like to scratch things that move, so you can use that to your advantage.. They also don’t like to scratch things that are sticky..
The hard part is that she already has her favorite spots chosen and you have to make those completely unpalatable first before she’ll use the scratching post..
Every time a cat scratches something, they leave behind scent that attracts them back via scent glands between their paw pads.. so, the first thing you have to do is cover their scent completely which I used the Boundary cat repellant for..
I wouldn’t think the garlic would work.. Many Cats aren’t repelled by garlic at all..
